Current research situation

In Germany, Corona is still an important topic and precautions are still necessary, but the good news is: At least for now, the research situation with regard to genealogical and inheritance research has normalized to a certain degree. Delays are, however, still possible.

The majority of archives have reopened by now - most, however, with restrictions. While this is great news, there are still some things that have to be considered for any kind of research: Usually an appointment has to be made and due to the reduced number of people currently allowed in the archives, longer waiting periods apply. Research is often more difficult due to shortened opening hours and limitations regarding the number of records made available during each archival visit. Other archives are still yet to re-opened either because their premises are not designed to allow visitor traffic in that location or because they are still working on suitable concepts to adhere to required hygiene standards.

Also, administration offices are often still working through a backlog. So their responses can take longer than usual, too.

The situation in other countries is very often similar depending on how hard the pandemic has hit a country in question. In some cases, it will take some time until re-openings of archives are possible.

As always, we are very eager to assist you with your family research in the best possible way. We keep track of the developments and try to find solutions wherever possible. However, we also hope that you will understand that most research aspects just take a little longer at the moment. Due to the aforementioned restrictions at the archives it is also possible that additional expenses may incurred. If this happens, we will certainly notify you accordingly in advance. In any case, we are doing everything to keep any negative effects for you at a minimum.

The whole Beyond History team very much hopes that a dramatic second wave of the pandemic can be avoided and that the research situation will continue to improve.

Please stay healthy!
