Andrea Bentschneider's great uncle Lothar Rex appears as "Luna" with bra and turban in front of other Wehrmacht soldiers.

Andrea Bentschneider in the newspapers of FUNKE Mediengruppe

We are very happy about the nice article titled "NS-Zeit: Was hat Opa zwischen 1933 und 1945 gemacht?" (Nazi era: What did grandpa do between 1933 and 1945?), which has been published online on the websites of the German FUNKE Mediengruppe (FUNKE media group) newspapers yesterday, 16 Feb 2023, and today, 17 Feb 2023, also in the print edition of e.g. the Hamburger Abendblatt (in the main section under politics) on page 4.

The article was written by Daniel Weidmann from the central editorial office of FUNKE Mediengruppe in Berlin. It supplies the regional newspapers with national and international content. In addition to Hamburger Abendblatt, these include Berliner Morgenpost, Bergedorfer Zeitung, Lauenburgische Landeszeitung, Braunschweiger Zeitung, Neue Rhein/Neue Ruhr Zeitung, Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung, Westfälische Rundschau, Westfalenpost, Ostthüringer Zeitung, Thüringer Allgemeine and Thüringische Landeszeitung.

Andrea Bentschneider was interviewed for the article. She talked about her own family history: Of her grandfather Hermann Rex and her great uncle Lothar Rex during World War II. There is a bizarre photo of the latter from his time in the Wehrmacht. Therefore, our boss was all the more excited when she inquired a few years ago at the former Deutsche Dienststelle (WASt), which today belongs to the Federal Archives. She learned more about the actual places of deployment and functions of her grandfather and great-uncle during the war. Information that added to the photos and letters she had and thus completed her picture.

As described in the article, the Federal Archives receive many inquiries every year, from private individuals but also from science and research. You will therefore need some patience, but often it is worth it - even if the documents are unfortunately far from complete and you therefore never know how extensive the answer will be. Of course, we are also happy to help with inquiries and further research on your ancestors, just contact us!
